The most popular attractions are Bath, Longleat, Lacock (home of Harry Potter's school), Wells, Stonehenge, Glastonbury, Avebury, Cheddar Gorge, Westbury White Horse, Bradford on Avon. The hotel is perfectly situated for walking & cycling the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath, either to Bath, or in the other direction, to the amazing flight of 21 locks at Caen Hill outside the picturesque town of Devizes. This is an increasingly popular pastime for all ages, as the towpath is a level surface, and something of interest can be seen at all times throughout the journey. Slow moving barges are a delight to behold with their mixture of bright colours, and barges young and old, all with the same passion for canal life. An abundance of bird life can be seen, from kingfishers to herons and many other sizes and species in between. Undisturbed flora and fauna are another rare feature of canal life which is very appealing, and of course, the PUBS along the way are a definite bonus.![]() Most places of interest in the area of Bath are to the south of the City, Consequently our hotel (9 miles from Bath) is the perfect touring centre. From here you can quickly access Bath, Salisbury, Stonehenge and Avebury. Other nearby places of interest include Longleat House, Glastonbury, Wells, Cheddar caves and the famous Wookey Hole, while the Cotswolds can be seen on a day trip, as can Exmoor. Many famous gardens both National Trust and private are in the area. Among them The Courts, Stourhead, Iford Manor, Bowood and Westonbirt. Link these to a tapestry of ancient Manor Houses, stone built and many with stone tiled roofs (including part of our house), Farmsteads, Inns and Villages, many dating back 500 or more years and showing the immense wealth created from wool, and it can be seen that the area is well worth visiting for a few days, or longer. Why not spend a day visiting all the sites in the area that are loved by FILM MAKERS especially for period dramas. Pride and Prejudice was filmed at LACOCK, the original Doctor Doolittle at CASTLE COMBE, a Recent children's serial at BRADFORD ON AVON tithe barn, many films at THE GEORGE INN, NORTON ST PHILIP, and of course, the many Large COUNTRY HOUSES and famous GARDENS in the area are ideal for film settings. LACOCK ABBEY was most recently used in the Harry Potter films as the setting for Hogwarts school.
Stonehenge is a Mysterious stone circle situated on Salisbury Plain. It has associations with Leylines and Pagan rituals and is one of the greatest tourist attractions in Wiltshire, with its origins still very real to the Druids, who worship the solstices throughout the year there. It is a World Heritage Site.
Nearby Avebury is a larger stone circle, which is attractive to passing
tourists as they can actually walk around and touch the stones. Recently,
a leading local expert has discovered what appear to be ancient faces (4000
years old) carved on some of the stones when the Sun is at a certain angle.
Westbury White Horse is one of five or so chalk horse hill carvings
in Wiltshire. Their origins (possibly religious or celebratory) are a mystery,
however they are fascinating in their execution and sheer size. Westbury
White Horse can be seen from many of the rooms in the hotel.
Wiltshire is a county of mystery. Are Crop circles a Man made elaborate
hoax, or formed by Alien forces? Nearby Warminster has been a center
of UFO sightings and crop circles since the 1960's.
Glastonbury Tor in adjacent Somerset, is to some, the center of Avalon,
and the leylines linking the country's mystical past sites. Tied up with
King Arthur and Biblical figures it is a fascinating place to visit.
Wells and Salisbury Cathedral are impressive examples of the stonemasons art. These craftsmen sometimes worked for their whole lives on the Cathedral to create one of the most incredible lasting examples of religious architecture in the last 1000 years. Salisbury Cathedral boasts one of the tallest spires in England. |
